John Harrington has travelled the world, From the Baltic region, throughout the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Mexico and the United States. John was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to Washington DC. A 2007 recipient of the United Nations' Leadership Award in the field of photography, Harrington's work has appeared in Life, Time, Newsweek and Rolling Stone, and his commercial clients have included Coca-Cola, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Lockheed Martin, and the National Geographic Society. His images from the Pentagon on September 11th, 2001 are a part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, and images from his efforts as a part of the team documenting the historic inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009 are also a part of that same Smithsonian collection. 


John has produced three commissioned books for the Smithsonian and the second edition of his book Best Business Practices for Photographers, remains a best-seller. In the Fall of 2010, a retrospective of the first 20 years in the profession - Photographs from the Edge of Reality, revisited highlights of his career, and in May of 2014 the companion book MORE Best Business Practices for Photographers expands and advances the same messages and concepts from the first book. John has lectured across the United States to events for the North American Nature Photographers Association, American Society of Media Photographers, American Photographic Artists, Professional Photographers of America, and the National Press Photographers Association. John concluded serving his second term as the President of the White House News Photographers Association in May of 2011, and currently serves as a National Director on the board of the American Society of Media Photographers as well as a National Director on the board of the National Press Photographers Association.
