River of Gold

Michael Forsberg

At sunrise, the fog lifts to reveal sandhill cranes roosting en masse on the braided shallows of the Platte River. Each spring, nearly one million migrating sandhill cranes descend to the Platte River Valley in Nebraska to rest and refuel before continuing their ancient journey to breeding grounds from Canada to Siberia. The Platte harbor is the largest gathering of cranes in the world.
