Canada jays breed during the winter, relying on food cached behind the bark of black spruce trees for survival and reproduction. Decades-long monitoring has recently linked freeze-thaw events—becoming more frequent with climate change—to a decrease in the jays’ reproductive success. Repeated freeze-thaw of the bird’s cached food supply is thought to be degrading its nutritional value.
